5 Tips For Keeping Mexican Food Healthy This Year

by Peppi Hautala

If you love eating Mexican food, but are trying to eat healthier this year, keep these tips in mind the next time you create or go out for Mexican food.

Skip The Chips

One of the easiest ways to make your Mexican food more healthy is by skipping the chips. If you are going out to eat, ask your server to not place any chips on your table; that way, you will not be tempted at all. Chips tend to be high in calories, and the serving sizes are pretty small. You add a lot of calories to your meal when you chow down on chips before you get your food.

If you are preparing food at home, just skip the chips altogether. That doesn't mean you have to skip out on the salsa though; just use it on your meal instead of on your chips.

Char Your Salsa For More Flavor

One of the best ways to add flavor to any Mexican dish is with a little salsa. Salsa is a great way to increase your vegetable consumption as well as increase the taste profile of whatever you are eating. If you prepare your own salsa, try dry-roasting the ingredients to get the most flavor out of them.

It's All About Balance

A true Mexican meal is all about balance. If you feel like having a more fatty cut of meat with your meal, keep the cut of meat small enough for you to enjoy it without adding too much fat to your meal. Make sure you balance out your meal with baked beans, rice and fresh salsa. You can put all of those ingredients inside of a corn tortilla.

Let the meat serve as more of a side dish to the rest of your meal instead of taking center stage.

Add In Spices

When you want more flavor, get it the healthy way by adding spices such as oregano, cloves, allspice and cinnamon to your dish. These are all common spices used in Mexican foods. When your meal satisfies your taste buds, you'll feel more full and less likely to indulge in unhealthy foods right after you eat.

Don't Forget About The Beans

When preparing your food, make sure that you don't forget about your beans. Mexican food is traditionally rich in beans; any kind you like. Beans provide you with a lot of protein and can really fill you up. Adding a serving of beans to your meal, and making sure that you eat those beans, will help you feel full and will cut down on snacking after your meal.
